Gloriana Paladin Prestige Class
Being a paladin in Gloriana is both a calling and a privilege given by other paladins. None begin their adventuring careers as a paladin; most begin as fighters or rangers, and a select few begin as barbarians or wizards or even Druids. Paladins of Gloriana seek to bring themselves into harmony with the Essential Rightness of the Universe, and bind themselves neither to god nor king. In rules terms, the Gloriana Paladin is a prestige class available to characters of 5th level or higher. If you wish to become one, you must notify the Storyteller staff, satisfy the prerequisites, and achieve fifth level in another class. If the Storyteller staff agrees that your character already acts as a Paladin of Gloriana should, an NPC Paladin may appear to further the character’s journey as a Paladin.
The Gloriana Paladin
- Level 1: Oath of Harmony, Perceive Danger, Paladin Sword
- Level 2: Lay on Hands
- Level 3: Sacred Health, Aura of Protection
- Level 4: Essential Rightness Prana
- Level 5: Unabated Attack, Honor Shield
- Character level 5th. A paladin must have time to evaluate a prospect during his or her adventuring career, and will not approach someone who is untested in his or her abilities.
- Strength 13 or Dexterity 13. Gloriana Paladins – as purveyors of peace – do not need to be paragons of brawn or avatars of agility, but such adventurers do face danger up-close more often than most.
- Charisma 13. The Gloriana Paladin is a shining beacon of kindness, and most of his or her abilities require this strength of presence.
- Proficiency in Persuasion. Peace is a process, often cemented with careful negotiation and discussion.
- Succeed in a Special Task. The paladins of Gloriana are constantly on the look-out for those that act with goodness for no gain. The prospect must refuse a significant reward for ridding the land of a major evil, as well as exhibit a connection to the “Essential Rightness of the Universe” during the process.
- Hit Dice: 1d10 per level of Gloriana Paladin
- Hit Points per level: 1d10 (or 6) + Constitution Modifier
- Proficiencies: Light armor, medium armor, shields, simple weapons, Paladin Sword
- Saving Throws: None
- Skills: None
- Equipment: The paladin is given a special weapon from the paladin that chooses him or her. This weapon is discussed in detail in Paladin Sword, below.
Oath of Harmony
Gloriana Paladins take the Oath of Harmony, which can be considered equivalent to the Sacred Oath feature of the Paladin class. A Gloriana Paladin’s abilities flow from these tenets, and breaking these tenets regularly can mean a loss of the paladin’s powers.
Oath of Harmony tenets:
Essential Rightness of the Universe. Uphold the Essential Rightness of all things. This involves:
*Kindness. Treat others with respect and fairness, and show mercy to those who wrong you.
*Charity. Give what you can to those who need it.
*Heroism. Seek to provide a better life for those around you. Seek difficult solutions rather than easy answers.
*Peace. Work toward non-violent resolutions of conflict, if possible. Encourage respectful debate over infighting and back-biting. Peace is not the absence of conflict, it is the presence of cooler minds prevailing over heated tempers and misunderstanding.
*Goodness over Law. If the Laws of the Land interfere with the Rights of the Individual to life, liberty, and fair treatment, do whatever can be done to rectify the situation.
Not for glory, not for gain, do these things because it is your Will to do so.
You have a preternatural ability to sense when something or someone desires to harm you. At 1st level, you have advantage on checks to avoid being surprised, and you can feel minor empathic currents which may give you information on how to handle a situation. You may ask the Storyteller at any time for such information, though the response may be more vague than desired.
The paladin who recruits you as a Gloriana Paladin gifts you with a +1 weapon. You are proficient with this weapon, and the weapon acts as a magical weapon of its type. This weapon must be of one of the following types: sickle, spear, battleaxe, flail, longsword, morningstar, rapier, scimitar, shortsword, trident, war pick, or warhammer, and has the properties of that weapon; traditionally, this weapon is a longsword, but battleaxe and warhammer are also common varieties.
While it functions as a typical magical weapon of its type in normal hands, it is not a weapon that is easily forged. Each one has a name, and in the hands of a Gloriana Paladin, the Paladin Sword’s potential is fully realized. You choose one enemy as a bonus action, and choose a damage type: radiant or fire; until that enemy is incapacitated, you do an additional 1d8 damage of that type when striking that enemy with your paladin sword. As a bonus action, you may choose to change targets, or you may choose to switch between radiant or fire damage, or both. This damage increases by 1d8 if the target is an undead or a fiend. While this feature is in effect, your paladin sword’s blade appears to be bathed in blue flames, emitting bright light in a 20-foot radius, and dim light 20 feet beyond that.
Lay On Hands
Your blessed touch can heal wounds. Starting at 2nd level, you have a pool of healing power that replenishes when you take a long rest. With that pool, you can restore a total number of hit points equal to your character level x 5. As an action, you can touch a creature and draw power from the pool to restore a number of hit points to that creature, up to the maximum amount remaining in your pool.
Alternatively, you can expend 5 hit points from your pool of healing to cure the target of one disease or neutralize one poison affecting it. You can cure multiple diseases and neutralize multiple poisons with a single use of Lay On Hands, expending hit points separately for each one.
This feature has no effect on the undead or on constructs.
By 3rd level, the Essential Rightness of the Universe flowing through you makes you immune to disease.
Aura of Protection
Starting at 3rd level, whenever you or a friendly creature within 10 feet of you must make a saving throw, the creature gains a bonus to the saving throw equal to your Charisma modifier (with a minimum bonus of +1). You must be conscious to grant this bonus. At the 5th level of Gloriana Paladin, this aura increases to 20 feet.
Essential Rightness Prana
The more good one does, the more good one can do. At 4th level, you are able to direct your abilities to where they are needed most. After a long rest, you may choose either to increase two of your abilities by one each or to increase one of your abilities by two. At the end of each subsequent long rest, your abilities reset to their previous levels, and you may choose to increase the same abilities as you did before, or you may choose to increase one or two different abilities in the same manner.
At 5th level, when you take the Attack action, you may use your reaction to make an additional attack.
At 5th level, you can create a shield that defends you from the worst of attacks. When you activate your Paladin Sword’s special ability or switch the target of that ability, you can choose to gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage for one minute. After using this ability, you must complete a long rest before doing so again.
